about

Freedom is a instrumental and vocal message that exemplifies every definition of the word. In this funky rendition, Shanyse combines multiple musical elements to create a mash up of different vibes and genres.

Starting off with a flute and drum duet, the snare and kick set off the march towards freedom during the intro to the song. Followed by a three part harmony choir, the intro segues into the verse, where the discussion of poverty and the ongoing trend of gentrification is happening in black communities. The chorus then follows with the full band, along with the need to “break these chains” of discrimination and poverty within the black community. Following the chorus enters the female rapper Xposure, who’s high energy immediately captures the listeners ear with the energy she conveys about the connection that America’s history has with the injustice of black people and the effects it has on their mental health. She encourages the undefeated to keep pushing towards the freedom we all deserve, which segues into the chorus again. The next section of the song takes a minor turn to a contemplative interlude leading with the melody from Denise Williams “Free.” A nice groove then leads to the bridge, which takes a interesting turn to the song. Here is where majikstrick shows off her classical chops by including an excerpt from Mahler 1 on French Horn, where she plays both octaves of the thematic material, then modulates the theme. During this entire epic moment, Xposure is speaking right into the souls of listeners with her spoken word segment focusing on the rewarding freedoms we all will achieve someday. The song then leads to a shout chorus and back to an acapella chorus finish it out.

lyrics

(intro)
La la la la la
Free, free, free

(vs.1)
I was born on the Northside of the Rubber City
So you can’t tell me I’m used to seein somethin pretty
Yea
Generation, fornication, we all know the deal
They want me to get out, just to get back I don’t know how to feel
But I know I want

(chorus)
Freedom
Freedom
Break these chains, break these curses away from me, you know I want
Freedom
Freedom
Im just tired of bein tired of bein tired o, I wana be free

Rap verse:
America the escape room but forgot we built it
so they take keys and got the nerve to call us thieves
No bail reform
the same size as dorms
Both momma and judges say that you can’t come home
Freedom never comes without oppression wisdom without lessons
Keep walking keep em guessin
Even though yo mind restless
Broke chains and change next
And knowledge muscles flexin
May make you lay down but can’t keep you down so right before you smile holla

(chorus)

(interlude)

(Bridge)

I’m gone be free!
I’m gone free like the land I stand on
Christopher Columbus swore he found the land I stand on
I’m gone be free in my mind and my body will follow
I’m going to free the people from sorrow
We are top notch
top of the food chain
Deep roots hollowed in culture
I’m gone be free from blue collared vultures
It has arrived!
Our awakening is on time.
I SMELL FREEDOM
I’m gone be free from oppression
I’m gone be from possession
I do not belong to anyone
It’s in my fingertips
I’m gone be free in my soul
Watch me be free!

(shout chorus)
Lovin’ myself exactly for who I am
Takin back what we grew with our hands
Not lookin back outa fear
Bitch I’m still here

(chorus x2)
